The Government has allowed cable television operators to provide Internet services via their cable network.
Last year, two cable television vendors, Saigontourist Cable Television (SCTV) and Hanoi Cable Television (HCATV), started a pilot program to offer broadband Internet connection, which may run five times faster than ADSL lines. At present, cable Internet connection is available only in Hanoi and HCM City. Vietnam Cable Television and HCM City Television have also asked for permission to provide Internet connection through television cable this year.
There are eight Internet service providers in Vietnam, including VDC, FPT, Viettel, Saigon Postel, OCI, Netnam, Hanoi Telecom and Tienet. Experts say the broadband Internet connection market will be more competitive when cable television vendors are allowed to join.
